108 Sun Salutations Series-003When you decide to step up for 108 Sun Salutations, remember that thousands of people have done so before you.
They stepped onto their mats and participated in the same inner dialogue that you’re likely having right now.
You aren’t alone in this.  I assure you.
In fact, I believe you’re most likely in the majority of our yoga sisters and brothers who go for the 108.
As you contemplate whether to try for your 108 Sun Salutations best, keep reminding yourself of these 5 things:

1. You are not alone.

When you are on your mat, and you look to your left and to your right, you’ll see others setting about to do what you are doing, DESPITE what their inner critic might be telling them.

2. Your body is more than capable.

We always seem to underestimate our own capacities and are frequently surprised by what we have done on the other side of a new experience or challenge. I am telling you that on the other end of your 108, you may feel ready to do another 100 Surya Namaskar.  That is a common response.  It should tell you about the kind of experience you’re about to get into.

3. You work at your own pace.

We all think differently and have our own personal perspectives on the world around us.  For yoga, most important is that we also breathe differently.  Your personal yoga flow should move with your breath.  Some of us take our yoga practice at a faster pace and get more aerobic with it.  I think that I tend to be this way.  Other yoga students like a slower pace and make their practice more meditative.  My husband definitely leans to that side of the spectrum.  You are in control of your personal 108 Sun Salutations.

4. You can modify where needed.

Just as the pace is yours, the movements are yours as well.  Is the downward facing dog becoming challenging in its full impression?  Drop to your knees and a take child pose.  Are the back of your arms burning up?  Lowering your knees to the floor in plank is perfectly respectable.

5. Rest is essential and available to you when you need it.

As with life itself, it is important to give yourself permission to rest.  It’s the best way to release tension, recuperate and restock your depleted energy store.  Challenge yourself to make sure it’s not an avoidance technique, but a restorative decision.
As you prepare for your personal 108 Sun Salutations I hope that these tips provide the resolve, fortification and mental oomph you need to astound yourself.
